Organ donor can be anyone of which the organ can be transplanted to the patient who urgently require a particular organ for his survival. The organ donated by the family of a normal person upon his death saved properly to transplant into the patient whoever he or she. One can get the new lease life through these organ transplantation.

Donating organs can actually comfort millions of such families. Despite India being the world’s second most populous country, sadly it has very poor organ donation rate. Organ donation rate in our country is just 0.36 per million while world highest in Croatia is 36.5 per million. “An estimated 2 lakh patients die of liver failure or liver cancer annually in India, about 10-15% of which can be saved with a timely liver transplant. Hence about 25-30 thousand liver transplants are needed annually in India. But because of shortage of organs only about 1500 are being performed.” Said Dr P Balachandran Menon, Senior Liver transplantation Surgeon - Yashoda Hospitals Secunderabad.
An estimated around 1.8 lakh persons suffer from renal failure every year, however, the number of renal transplants done is around 6000 only. “Even small percentage of improvement in organ donation from present 0.36 to a 1 per million-donation rate, India would have 1,250 organ donors or 2,500 kidneys additionally .” estimated Dr. B.Surya Praksh Senoir Urologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon at Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet.
Low awareness levels and superstitious beliefs are the biggest hurdles keeping our nation low in organ donation and transplantations.
